The Water and Energy for Food (WE4F) programme is funded by Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Commission (EU) and is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in two regional hubs in East and West Africa. The programme aims to increase food production and income of smallholder farmers through a more sustainable use of water and energy in food production.
The objective of the project is to support Small and Medium Enterprises that provide innovative approaches for the development of water and energy solutions for agriculture. For this reason the project aims at organising innovation calls to Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) that provide innovative climate friendly, water and energy solutions and to support these SME in accessing appropriate financing options and framework conditions.
Your Main Duties in this Position
Lead and steer the project, as well as function as the main focal point for the WE4F programme in East Africa (Lot 1)
Demonstrate high level of knowledge of and experience in business development (10 years) and in the context of energy, water and food (3 years)
Understand and develop a comprehensive understanding of the variety of international and national partners in the operating environment
Build relationships and communicate effectively – including making technical presentation – with various actors in East Africa (Lot 1) to maintain effective relationships across different cultures and communicate with a wide range of stakeholders.
Demonstrate effective problem-solving skills by (pro)actively analysing and anticipating challenges and suggesting way-forward to tackle issues at hand effectively
Develop realistic and appropriate action plans across a range of subjects that can enable private businesses to make progress on innovations design, capacity building and business model development
Demonstrate and integrate financial knowledge and skills to assess detailed concepts/ plans, Excel, etc, in the business model analysis and planning processes
Manage the relationship with GIZ regional hub team as well as partner relationship managers.
Your Educational Background/ Expertise
- Master’s degree in business management, economics, engineering, agronomics or social sciences related to technology advances in energy, water and agriculture
- English C1
- Experience in introducing innovations through innovation calls (10 years), especially for energy or water efficiency into agriculture (3 years)
- Leadership/Management experience with a team size of 5 or more staff (10 years)
- Experience in managing and monitoring of development cooperation projects (5 years)
- 5 years of professional experience in projects in East Africa (region)

Time Schedule / Duration of Assignment
The project is scheduled to start by December 2020 and will run for 2 years, 4 months.
The duration of your assignment in this role is set for the entire project period; the exact assignment times are subject to project needs. For orientation purposes the expected assignment period is 28 expert months or 500 expert days on-site assignment (between December 2020 – March 2023) and 60 expert days in the region East Africa (Lot 1).
