Our Vacancy

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Project Manager to join our Department of Climate and Natural Resources (CNR). The ideal candidate will have an established professional network in Asia and Africa, coupled with extensive market knowledge in these regions, with a particular focus on rural development, climate-smart agriculture, natural resources and sustainable land management[
In this position you will be responsible for technical expert input, project acquisition, technical and organizational coordination including result monitoring. You will undertake assignments in current and future projects abroad. Moreover, you will be involved in the guidance and training of local and international staff.
For applicants with relevant experience and well-developed professional networks in these regions, the position is envisaged to also cover the role of Deputy to the Department Director in the designated region(s), supporting and assisting in the management and strategic direction of the department, ensuring continuity and stability in the director’s absence and contributing to the overall success of the department. This dual role will require strong leadership skills, the ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders, and a comprehensive understanding of the department’s operations.

  

Main Duties in this Position

In this position, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks including project acquisition, implementation/backstopping of ongoing projects and strategic development of the departments business areas in the target region(s). This will include:

 

  • Professional development of our African/Asian portfolio and network, and independent acquisition of projects in the region
  • Overseeing project teams and providing guidance and mentorship to junior staff
  • Regular follow-up with national and international stakeholders
  • Identification and liaison with potential partner companies and expert staff
  • Reporting, quality assurance, monitoring (technical, financial, organizational) in ongoing projects
  • Expert input for project acquisition and implementation
  • Coordination with GITEC-IGIP departments both in Cologne and abroad
  • Reporting directly to the Director of the Department Climate and Natural Resources

 

Educational background

  • Master's degree in a relevant field (Agricultural Sciences, (Social) Geography, Sociology / Anthropology, Economics, Forestry, Livelihoods & Rural Development, or similar)

 

Required Expertise / Profile

  • Full fluency in English; good command of French is an asset
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant professional experience, ideally 15 years +
  • Profound experience in technical and financial management of complex international projects in rural development, climate-smart agriculture and natural resources management
  • Relevant work experience with a strong professional network in Africa and Asia
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills
  • In-depth understanding of the development cooperation sector and publicly funded project landscape (e.g. EU, KfW, GIZ, ADB, etc.)
  • Interested in filling a long-term, sustainable position with growth perspective in Cologne, Germany
